Gulf states urge US to avoid military action against Iran
Saudi Arabia, along with Oman and Qatar, has been engaging in quiet diplomatic efforts to influence the Trump administration after receiving signals from the White House to brace for potential action targeting Tehran, as stated by reports. Although these governments have avoided public commentary while Iran faces large-scale protests, they are said to be urging US officials privately to reconsider any military option.
Officials from the Gulf region have cautioned that an attempt to forcibly remove Iran’s leadership could seriously disrupt global energy markets, particularly by threatening oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway is considered vital, carrying roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.
Regional leaders are also concerned about internal repercussions, possible economic fallout, and the risk of retaliatory measures should US forces proceed with an attack.
Saudi officials have reportedly communicated to Tehran that the kingdom would not take part in any conflict and would not permit the use of its airspace for military operations, signaling an effort to avoid direct involvement in a confrontation.
“The president listens to a host of opinions on any given issue, but ultimately makes the decision he feels is best,” a White House official said.
US President Donald Trump has yet to announce a definitive course of action. However, he posted a message on social media on Tuesday stating, “HELP IS ON ITS WAY,” while encouraging Iranian protesters to continue.
Gulf leaders are said to be uneasy about the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s future should its current leadership fall, including concerns that power could shift to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or that the situation could descend into broader regional instability.
“They have no love for the Iranian regime,” said a former US ambassador, “but they also have a great aversion to instability.”
