Trump Declares Iran Nuclear Talks Advancing 'At a Rapid Pace'

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump declared Monday that diplomatic negotiations with Iran are pressing forward at speed, even as Tehran signaled a suspension of back-channel communications with Washington.

"Talks are continuing, at a rapid pace, with the Islamic Republic of Iran," Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social.

The statement landed in sharp contrast to an earlier report from Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency, which said Tehran had frozen indirect exchanges with the US through mediating parties — a move framed as a protest against continued Israeli military operations in Lebanon.

The diplomatic tension is rooted in a broader regional crisis that ignited when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran in February. Tehran responded forcefully, striking back at Israel and US allies throughout the Gulf while shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, sending shockwaves across global energy and shipping markets.

A ceasefire negotiated through Pakistani mediation halted the hostilities on April 8, yet follow-on talks held in Islamabad failed to lock in a permanent settlement. Despite that setback, diplomatic efforts toward a durable resolution have not ceased, with multiple parties continuing to engage behind the scenes.

Trump's Monday declaration suggests Washington views the negotiating track as still very much alive — even as competing signals from Tehran paint a more complicated and volatile diplomatic picture.
